Newcastle Airport expansion plans

Newcastle International Airport is currently consulting with the public on their draft ‘Masterplan 2040’ project, which involves a probable doubling of passenger capacity to 9 million for Newcastle Airport by 2040.
Given the increase in carbon emissions these measures will incur, we are opposed to the expansion. No figures have been given for future flight emissions, only the hub. If our political leaders are serious about achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and opinion polls consistently report that a majority of the public want that, then we will have to reduce the use of untaxed aviation fuel (kerosene), not increase it, i.e. oppose an increase in passengers by 2040.

NEPTUG’s Management Committee recently agreed to respond to the airport’s consultation opposing the planned expansion of Newcastle Airport.
We also await further detail being published on how the expansion effects ‘ground transportation’, i.e. the doubling of numbers of people travelling to and from the airport.
